An Interview With RussellRedenbaugh

Russell Redenbaugh is an amazing man. I first learned about him while doing an interview with Steve Maxwell. Maxwell told me about a client of his who became a three time world champion in Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and their relationship. It was an interesting enough story that I contacted Russell to see if he would be willing to share his story. He graciously accepted my interview request and here is the result.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Growing up in Utah
  • Girls and the space program
  • How a former MASH nurse saved his life
  • “because I wasn’t a rocket scientist”
  • Getting his first guide dog
  • From marginal high school student to first in his class at Utah State
  • Being turned down by both Harvard and Stanford because he was blind
  • The Wharton school of business gave him a chance
  • Only fifth in his class for his MBA
  • 49 interviews and 49 “refusals”
  • Why he thinks the ADA has made things worse
  • His first job and how it cost him money
  • A 20 year relationship
  • How Steve Maxwell changed his life
  • Brazilian Ju-Jitsu
  • Three trips to Rio and three world championships!
  • Quitting while he was on top
  • Serving as a US commissioner for civil rights
  • Starting his own investment firm
  • Don’t believe in disabling narratives
