Would You Like to Super-Size That?

Bacon burger and a mountain of fries

Today I have some food for thought, literally. In this world of obese people everywhere, and thousands of diet books and blogs I want to put in my two cents. First I am going to piss a few people off by saying that obesity is not a disease it’s a choice. Now I am not saying that there are not people with health issues such as thyroid conditions and other medical problems that cause weight gain. What I am saying is that the majority of overweight people in this country could do something about it if they really wanted to!

Yes obesity has reached epidemic proportions both in adults and children.

The children are the sad part. Go to the mall and just watch all of the fat kids wandering around. Yes I said FAT because that’s what they are! If you don't already know me you will quickly learn that political correctness is not part of my personality. Bluntness, directness and honesty however, are. And just for the record I used to be one of those FAT KIDS many years ago. The really sad thing is they don't realize that anything is wrong, and if they are this heavy and out of shape in their teens, just what is their health going to be like when they are in their 40’s or 50’s? If they live that long.

I have a friend who is a retired high school football coach who told me he went to five funerals last year. Five of his former players all died in one year and all of them were in their early 50’s! No car accidents, no drive by shootings - all from "natural causes"!!!
That is if you call cholesterol and triglycerides being through the roof, and high blood pressure and heart disease "natural causes”.

My wife and I recently had dinner with one of her coworkers and her family. We dined at one of our favorite Italian restaurants. The woman ordered a huge meal featuring three of the house specialties: chicken parmesan, baked lasagna and a meatball all covered in a generous coating of cheese! She ate every bite plus several garlic rolls! Then she made a comment I will never forget, "I am so stuffed I can barely breathe ... what's good for dessert here?" Oh, did I forget to mention the three or four refills of soda? Now I have to say this woman is meticulous about her looks. Her hair, makeup and nails are always perfect. I have met her parents and neither of them are overweight and neither are her children. To the best of my knowledge her health is good. So what's the problem? My spies tell me that throughout the work day she either has a cup of Cuban coffee (equal parts sugar to coffee) or a giant sized soda on her desk ... and well, I already told you what she ate that night. Sadly this lady is the norm and not the exception today.

The average person should only eat about 2,000 - 2,500 calories per day, and knocking back in excess of 5,000 during just one meal is nothing short of insanity!
We need to wake up before it's too late!

One of the things (excuses?) I always hear from people is that 'eating right" is so expensive. It isn't hard to see. Economy is bad. Off to the 'dollar menu' many of us go.

Its true that eating really healthy can be to costly for some people HOWEVER everyone can make small efforts to eat a little better. Even on that $ menu you can find better and worse choices. Skip the soda, skip the fries get a couple burgers or chicken sandwitches(if they don't bread and fry the chicken)and throw away half the bread. I am not gonna say go for the salad because after you pile on the fake cheese and the dressing its really not much better than the burger option.

I got a book from a colleague about green shakes, basically vegetable and/or fruit blends. The idea is that you consume these for all three meals for ten days. You should see a difference. I can't give up meat cold turkey, so I'm going to try two shakes a day and a moderate dinner, see if this might make a difference. By the way, readers ought to check out that favorite weight loss secret. Sadly, it is on the mark.

Extreeme or crash diets like consuming only three shakes a day are not a good plan for long term success if your goal is to lose bodyfat. simply cut back on the garbage, drink water instead of soda and TRY to do your best to eat healither. If you have to donder if you can eat some thing or not the answer is probably not.
